My Black Is…
Originally published on April 15, 2019
Over the past couple of years, the idea of blackness has catapulted into a cultural trend that many people want to be apart of. For many, including myself, being black isn't just about skin color ..it's a way of life. There was a point in time when being black in America meant scrutiny, struggle, and limitations. I'm beyond thankful for the village of brave souls in every community and industry that remained resilient in their minds and hearts. My black is resilience, vulnerability, and freedom. I love the fact that I live in a country where I can celebrate being dark and lovely. I can celebrate the strength of my predecessors while continuing to walk in the same integrity and strength to uplift my own community. I can be honest with myself and trust God's plan for my life without worry or stress. I am blessed to be able to live a rich and fruitful life while walking along the backs and intellect of the likes of people like W.E.B. DuBois, Shirley Chisolm, and Michelle Obama. I can be me...authentically.
Social media and other outlets could have you thinking that young black adults of today are uninformed or apathetic about being black. I had the pleasure of talking with some of my friends who give you their perspective on what black is. Check out the video below.
We are more than just people. We are more than just young adults. We are black and proud!
What does blackness mean to you? Let me know in the comments.
